I would suggest going to www.wizardofodds.com. For many games you can get the return for each payout (which is the percentage that the type of hand contributes to the EV). All you have to do is multiply the royal flush return by the percentage increase due to the progressive jackpot. So if the standard jackpot is $4,000, multiply the royal flush return by 0.025 for a $4,100 jackpot, 0.05 for $4,200, 0.1 for $4,400, etc. Then add this to the EV shown to get the EV for the higher progressive jackpot. This calculation assumes no change in strategy to account for the higher progressive jackpot; if you are able to adjust the optimal strategy to apply to the higher jackpot, you will be going for the royal flush slightly more often and this will slightly increase your EV.
I've been working on a video poker program, and this is what I calculated for $1 9/6 JOB progressives. The first EV column is if you continue to play the standard optimal strategy based on a $4,000 jackpot, and the second EV column assumes that you adjust your strategy so that you are playing by the optimal strategy for the specified jackpot level. I personally use some adjustments that I was able to calculate based on the jackpot level, but I don't know if I'm making all possible adjustments so I might not be getting the full amount of the higher EV shown below. (Note that the last row shows the point that the jackpot needs to reach to get to 100% EV.)
EV Without EV With
Strategy Strategy
Jackpot Adjustment Adjustment
$4,000 99.543904% 99.543904%
$4,100 99.593421% 99.593864%
$4,200 99.642937% 99.644111%
$4,300 99.692454% 99.694690%
$4,400 99.741971% 99.746216%
$4,500 99.791487% 99.798175%
$4,600 99.841004% 99.850502%
$4,700 99.890520% 99.903005%
$4,800 99.940037% 99.955927%
$4,900 99.989553% 100.011154%
$5,000 100.039070% 100.067027%
$5,500 100.286652% 100.353939%
100% EV $4,921.10 $4,879.97
You'll notice that the first EV column increases by the same amount for each $100 increase in the jackpot, because your strategy never changes, and your EV only increases due to the higher jackpot. In the second EV column, the EV increases by a higher and higher percentage each time the jackpot increases, because the strategy adjustments favor going for the royal flush more often due to its higher value.
Where I play in Bally's AC, the jackpot rarely gets into the mid or upper $4,000's, so adjusting your strategy will hardly ever be worth more than another 0.01% in EV. But you can see that at an unusually high jackpot of $5,500, the strategy adjustments become more important and the EV can improve by close to 0.07%.
Please note that I can't guarantee the accuracy of my calculations, but I'm fairly certain they are correct. If anyone thinks I'm wrong, please let me know.
Even if there are websites that do this for you, it is still good to understand the basic mathematical principles behind it, so I hope this helps.
