I've only stayed Downtown once (earlier this month) and was comped at Main Street Station - which I enjoyed very much. I like the "feel" of the space. The casino floor feels roomy whereas G.N. always feels cramped & claustrophobic to me.
Not exactly the "advice" you're looking for - but I'd avoid the G.N.s craps tables. You can't see them, but if you rub your hand over the felt at each end of the tables, you'll feel the "rumble strips" they've put in to insure some extra bounce of the dice. The tables at Binions' and The California are good - though long.
