[POKERHOLICS - Also at Myspace!!] Top 10 Beginner Poker Tips

Poker is a game of knowledge, and if you're a beginner it's important to know the do's and dont's. This top 10 beginner poker tips list will teach you the fundamentals you need to know to start earning money from this fantastic game. You won't probably become a pro player overnight, but these tips will easily boost your poker performance and profits.

1. Do Not Play Too Many Hands / Do Fold More
Probably the number one mistake of beginning poker players is that they don't stick with the best starting hands. Playing more doesn't mean winning more, it usually means losing more money. If you find you're staying in half or more the hands you're dealt, you need to improve your starting hand requirements.

2. Do Not Bluff Just For Bluffing's Sake
Beginners often think that they they have to bluff to be a winner in poker. Many new players even don't feel like they've won unless they've tried a poker bluff. The real art of knowing when to bluff comes from lots of practice and experience so if you are just starting playing poker, you should not try to bluff "just to bluff" and only play your best hands.

3. Do Pay Attention To Your Opponent's Cards
In poker, it is extremely important to be able to tell what kind of hand your opponent has, instead of just focusing on your cards. Having a strong hand is pretty cool, but you should always be ready to fold if you suspect that your opponent's hand is better. A straight might be a rather good hand, but keep in mind that if there are four suited cards on the turn and another player bets hard, you might be in trouble.

4. Do Play Against Weak Players
It might seem like an obvious tip, but I often see players that don't care and then complain when they lost all their money to poker sharks. If you play better than your opponents, you will ultimately be a winning player. If you are the 5th best player in the world, it's not wise to join a table where the 4 world's best poker players are seated. So sit at the most profitable tables and play at limits you can afford.

5. Do Pay Attention To Position
Position is an essential factor when playing poker in general, and particularly Texas Holdem. The top position you can have is when you are last to talk in the hand. This will help you tell what hand your opponents might have before making your move. Keep in mind that if you have position on your opponents, you can outperform them even if you have a weak hand.

6. Stay Focused on the Game
If you want to read your opponents, then you have to watch the way they play their hands. It doesn't matter if you folded or not, you should stay focused on the game at all times to better learn how other people play. You'll see what kind of moves they come up with when they have a good hand, and what moves they come up with when they don't have the best hand. The more data you can get from other players, the easier it will be to beat the game.

7. Don't Play At Too High Limits
There are two main reasons why you must not put too many chips on the table as a beginner. The first reason is that people playing at high limits will be stronger than people playing at low limits. You'll have less chance to beat your opponents and you'll waste lots of money trying to get better at poker in the process. The second reason is that you should only enter pots at the limits you can afford to play. You shouldn't play at limits where you are going to spend too much money and destroy your bankroll. Read the poker bankroll management article for more advice.

8. Do Not Spend Too Much on Draws
You will regularly hold an incomplete hand that needs just one more card to make a flush or a straight. You must keep in mind that if your opponent bets heavily, then it's not wise to go after the draws. But if there's only a small amount of betting on the table then it might be clever to call and try to complete the hand. If it seems the amount of cash your adversary bets is too high for a call that will make you a hand, then you shouldn't bet. You will find more tips on how to make the right call for draws in the pot odds article.

9. Suited Cards Aren't So Great
The most common beginner mistake is overestimating the value of suited cards. Remember that flushes are not as frequent as you might believe, so if you try to compete with two small suited cards, you will probably give away all your bet to a better flush if it comes. Suited cards only improve your chances by 2% in comparison to a hand that is not suited. This minor difference is too small to give you the edge when you call a pre-flop raise, so don't hesitate to throw away small suited cards before it's too late.

10. Don't Play Drunk
I remember those nights when I sat across a table playing with friends and watched them get drunk and throw away their entire stack of chips. It happened to me too, and when you're playing with friends for low stakes, it's more about the fun and laughs than the poker. However, if you're playing online or in a casino, watch the alcohol consumption. You might be more relaxed after one or two drinks, but it might also lead you to playing less sharply and getting easily distracted.
