ROOMS: I happen to be staying in a one-bedroom suite at THEhotel,
Mandalay Bay right now. It's not nearly as large as it appears in the
photos online but the furnishings, etc are exactly as portrayed. It's a
much longer walk to the casino area and back than from the regular
rooms. The service has been spectacular - check in gals were chatty and
friendly and offered all kinds of help, the Bellman brought up my bags
and filled my ice bucket before he left, and there was a daily USA
newspaper outside our door each morning. We opted for two queen beds in
the bedroom because it is my son's birthday. Everything is very noce --
but honestly, it seems like the regular rooms are a bit larger even
though they are single rooms. We usually stay in the regular rooms with
two queens and they seem luxuriously large. If I was paying, I'd stay
at Mandalay Bay not THEhotel, but this is comped and it gives us a
separate area for television viewing while everyone sleeps. Both are
very nice, but if money is an issue, stay at the regular rooms and save
HEhotel for special pricey treats.
A CONCERN: We are here for three nights. Both of our first two days a
male worker used a key about 3pm in the afternoon and came into my suite
unannounced. It was not housekeeping and when I asked what he wanted,
both times the man just said sorry and left the room immediately. It
wasn't housekeeping because they had already came and went. I called
the Front Desk the second time it happened, and was told it was just the
man who checks and refills the in-room mini-bar. Neither man seemed to
speak good English, and being a woman in the room alone during the day,
it concerned me. Ladies ... be forewarned should you stay there and
don't run around the suite "naked" *grin* ... Me on the other hand, I
plan to be stark naked tomorrow afternoon when he shows up - that'll
teach him to enter unannounced. The sight of this baggy 50 year old
titty dragging body well blind him or send him into hysterics, and then
he and I will be even *big grin*
NEARBY: Just outside the elevators, there is a nice bar and a coffee
bar (which was not open any day we were there so maybe it's brand new)
and a pricey restaurant (about $25 per person for breakfast and $25 per
person for a dinner tasting menu). Don't know about you *grin* but I
want more than a taste.
SLOTS: I played slots through out the casino, pennies and nickel. On
minimum play it ate the funds right up on both. On nickel machines with
20x5 or 25x5 there was pretty good playback but nothing special. I
didn't win anything good at all, even though I played about $1000 direct
(about $5000 replay). Slots were definitely tighter than they were last
year, but looser than other places we've stayed in the past six months.
FOOD: I use to love the Bayside Buffet, however it was just so-so this
time. The Sushi bar was great right down to the Sake I got snockered
on. Go to the Sushi Bar during Happy hour and sushi rolls are $5 each,
bottle of Sake $5, and rice and cucumber salads $3.50. The spicy tuna
roll was fabulous. *watch out for that sake* it sneaks up on you. Note:
A Japanese friend of mine showed me a taste trick with Sake, but it's
considered a manners-no-no - add a little sugar or honey to the hot Sake
and it goes down a lot smoother.
FREE PLAY: I have some free slot play comps for the MGM and New York
New York while I'm here. I'll try to post afterwards and let you know
how the slots are there. I'll also let you know what comps I receive
from this visit. I already have another three-night stay at THEhotel
sitting in my email box of offers, plus two nights at Treasure Island in
June, and several three night packages at the Excalibur. I'm a bit
burned out on the Excalibur though - and one thing I can say about the
Mandalay Bay - they have the best beds in town! Right now, free night
comps are being gfiven away like water to the thirsty.
LASTLY: CITY CENTER: During your stay at THEhotel. you'll receive an
invite to view the condos for sale at City Center, a nice little
two-three hour tour. We didn't go this time, but we plan to on our next
visit, next month sometime, but not to buy (way out our budget
restraints) but my husband built it (he's an ironworker) and we want to
see the finished product.
