and Fitzgerald's.
The Plaza: We usually received three nights room comp plus free buffet
and free play coins for a specific machine we never won anything on
except free drinks. The slots use to be pretty loose even though we
never won anything worth keeping - at least we played a long time. As
for the rooms, they are very old and so were the mattresses. I found it
too uncomfortable to stay three nights on those old mattresses, so I
went to the desk and asked for an upgrade - even offered to pay for it.
I just wanted a decent bed. I was told there are no suites or nicer
rooms for regular customers - only a few for the high rollers and they
are always comped and never sold. All the other guests rooms are alike
- I guess that means awful mattresses. So when I stayed there, I just
stayed up all night and played and when I got too tired to last any
longer, I checked out and went home (but I'm a local, just an hour drive
away so it's easy to go home). Note: I think the best time to stay
downtown is over Christmas holidays. The Plaza sets up an outside bar
that serves Hot Toddies and other heated alcoholic drinks that are "to
die for" complete with a "little bit nasty" Santa for the adults.
Las Vegas Club: Sorry to say, same cheap rooms with bad mattresses and
I don't really feel safe in their parking garage. Slots were tighter
than a tiny rubberband.
Fitzgerald's: The slots use to be great. If you played max on nickels
you could really win. Don't know how it is now with the economy though.
The rooms are little bigger than the Plaza or Las Vegas Club (still on
the small side though) but last time I was there they still had the
cheap mattresses which seems to be a given for many downtown hotels. I
was told they were upgrading the rooms but I found the mattresses were
still the same. The rooms I stayed in had NO internet access at all, so
you had to go down stairs and wait in line for the computer business
center (two computers and pay by the minute with pre-paid cards or CC).
I use to receive two nights comped, free private buffet with drawings
for free slot play, free chocolate party, etc. However, I had a bad
experience there. I am diabetic. I took my shot and started downstairs
for a meal, but found the elevators - all of them - were not working
right. The elevators were running real slow and stopping at every
floor. That made it a 30 minute ride from the 22 floor to the ground -
if your elevator didn't stop completely before the ground floor (which
they sometimes tended to do). I couldn't wait that long for food, so I
called the desk and explained my situation. I could not walk down 22
floors nor could I wait that long for food with the shot I took. They
essentially told me tough. Even though the service elevator was running
they said I could not order room service (they didn't have it) and I
couldn't use the service elevator. They had no solution other than take
the stairs or wait until the elevators were working again. Needless to
say - it was my last stay with them. I took the service elevator anyway
and threatened to call the police if they tried to make an issue out of
it. Not long after that, we saw on the news that the elevator had fell
and injured several people. I try to avoid casinos with unsafe policies
and these elevators were having this problem for several months during
my visits. Won't be back for the hotel but I still gamble on the lower
two floors.
At all three, I was told upgraded rooms were not available, except the
Fitzgerald's which said it was on an availability basis only and every
time I asked (which was many times) none were available.
