[casino_comps] Lost and recovered message

Downtown Eats

The Las Vegas Club and Plaza are sister properties, so when you play at
one but have Player's Cards from both, you get comps at both. Go to the
websites of each hotel for a list of diners at each. And don't expect
the food to look like the photos, because I've never gotten a meal yet
that did. Both have mediocre food on their best days.

Las Vegas Club: The casino use to have a restaurant called the Upper
Deck which had some cheap but good meals on their specials menu, like
all you could eat BBQ ribs for $7.00, etc. but alas it closed two years
ago. Not sure why they close the good restaurants and keep the crappy
buffets open. All the restaurants are pretty mediocre.

Plaza: Went to Lombardi's one night and it was good then went again and
it sucked. All the restaurants are pretty mediocre.

Fitzgerald's: When we wanted a nice, upscale late dinner, we'd eat at
the Shamrock but that, too, has been closed and replaced with Don B's
Steakhouse. All the restaurants are pretty mediocre - but haven't tried
the Steakhouse yet. I'm pretty picky when it comes to steak. (Which
reminds me of an experience at Chris Ruth's Steakhouse: I would never
pay their prices for food, but I won a comp dinner for four. Honestly
the food was just average. I've had better at prices less than 1/3 what
they charged. But the topper for the experience was they had us hold
our napkins up in front of our clothes when they brought the sizzling
plates out so the grease off the dishes would not splatter us. *eye
roll* Talk about classy *sarcasm intended*.)

Golden Nugget: You best bet downtown is to eat at the Golden Nugget.
The cafe is upscale but reasonably priced. I like trout and it's really
good on their menu, and I figure if they can get that right most
everything else will be good, too. The buffet is pretty good, too, for
downtown. But keep in mind, I'm a Foodie and I don't really like cheap
nasty eats, so I'm willing to pay a couple bucks more for taste and
proper cooking. The Nugget seems pretty consistent about keeping their
upscale image downtown and compared to most of donwtown they are better
in the food department.

Forget those food specials like 99 cent deep-fried Oreos, etc. I've
always wanted to try them. But it seems that you can only get those at
specific hours or if you are Anthony Bordain doing his food travel show.
Plus they are just draws to the nastier casinos that like ripping off
the tourists.

I would also suggest trying some of the newer places like the
Hennessey's Tavern which is located on the corner of Fremont Street
& Las Vegas Blvd. I sometimes find that bar food (appetizers and such)
are better than most restaurant menus even though I don't drink.

I stay downtown mainly over the Christmas holidays. I just love the hot
toddy outside bar the Plaza sets up. About three of those and I'm warm
as toast, more friendly than I need to be (ask Santa about that *lol*),
and seeing everything that was below par (like mattresses) as perfectly
delightful. *grin* Plus all the decorations are so warm and nice.

If you are up to a little travel, certainly try some of the restaurants
at the Town Square Mall at the end of the Las Vegas Blvd, past the
Mandalay Bay. There is a restaurant sports bar called the Yard House
across from the Rave Theaters. We've eaten there about a dozens times
and it has been delicious, worth every penny. Grab a bite and see a
movie.
