I to have found gambling skills to come in handy during the course of normal life. I'd write more, but I have a gamble on a date tonight with a scientist from Louisiana that protects endangered species.

If I can convince her I think rationally, perhaps she try to protect me.

I am a bit confused. How does 9300 points convert to $323 in comps using your conversion rate?

The 1850 Shelby County, Alabama census records 56 Crims. Those under the age of 25 were born in Alabama, those older than 25 were born in South Carolina--which pretty much means this Crim clan migrated in the year 1825. There were 4 patriarchs in the clan, George Crim, Hardy Crim, Abraham Crim and Peter Crim.

I'm a descendent of George (3rd great-grandfather) and have been Y-Chromosome DNA tested by Ancestry.com. Descendents of Abraham Crim and Peter Crim have also been DNA tested. The tests prove our relationship. So I'm about 100% sure that my father is my real father.

My 2nd great-grandfather, William Wesley Crimm, somehow wound up with two M's in his last name.

Sorry, Randy, but that's just not true. The update was sent to you, but
it was rejected by your ucla.edu ISP. I responded to each of your
emails telling you this.

To receive the free updates you must provide an email address where you
can receive a large .zip attachment containing an application. Addresses
with .edu suffix rarely work, and gmail never works. If you don't have a
direct address where you can receive the attachment then please use a
Yahoo account. Alternatively, I will send the complete new version on CD
for only $5.00.

I have completed my interview with Dr. William G. McCown, the dean of the university of Louisiana at Munroe and author of several books on problem gambling. The focus was on problem prevention, rather than late stage treatment for those that already have problems. It should be very interesting to anyone that plays now, or that is considering playing in the future.

It will first appear in the Blackjack Insider Newsletter as my February article, and then I will repost it here for free for those of you that don't get the BJI.

I am of the opinion that we need people who are willing to play short pay machines.

Here is a hypothetical situation for you. What if EVERYONE was an aspiring advantage player and would only play full pay machines at near expert level? If I had to guess, I'd say the casinos would simply no longer offer video poker.

I believe bad players need to exist for the gambling eco system to thrive.

Big Guy: I had a 7 Star trip to Caesars a couple of years ago and it was absolutely great. We prefer more upscale environment so that fit us perfectly. The room in the Augustus tower was great; food & service at all outlets wonderful and overall ambiance excellent. I have stayed at Ballys, Paris, Harrahs and Rio, although not as a 7 Star. The accommodations were good but we never felt that the properties were luxury enough. Paris started reaching it, but we just never liked the casino ambiance.

I will tell you, though, just because you are 7 Star, you will be just one of many, so don't expect truely differential treatment like you might get at a smaller property. Now, I have read a report by someone who chose the Flamingo and did receive that special treatment, but personally, we do not care for the casino.

All of the CE properties have terrible pay schedules for VP, unless you jump up to the $5 level for 9/6 JOB. There are not many of those machines at each property either.

We have been to the Paris/Ballys, Harrah's, Flamingo and Caesars Diamond lounges. Of those, I would rank Caesars then Paris. The other two are also rans. Have not been to the Rio Diamond lounge. Some may disagree because they are looking for more substantial food offerings (none of them are great) but we just look for ambiance and a place to relax.

Caesars restaurants are all excellent albeit pricey, as all are I guess. Have not really eaten at others although I would strongly recommend the Eifle Tower restaurant at Paris, if you want a nice romantic dinner for two. The view is spectacular, the food excellent and service also is excellent.

As far as the 7* perks, look on the CE webiste and you can find the various benefits by property. The Caesars pool complex is excellent; we have not experienced the others. Also the Spa at Caesars is outstanding for both sexes. As we don't do the night clubs etc. we cannot comment on that.

Do not forget that both Diamond and 7 Star holders can get a pair of free tickets to several CE shows. I would strongly recommend Human Nature (a wierd name for an Aussie group that sings Motown - sounds wierd, but outstanding performance.).

Loren, my web site is hosted by RGE, and they sell a lot of my products,
but they are a separate company. I do not have access to their customer,
so a purchase of OpVP 3 from them is not automatically registered with me.

When purchasing OpVP 3 from any retailer, you must register it with me
to receive the free updates. The OpVP 3 CD has a "Read Me First" pdf
document which contains a registration form. You can print that form and

I was going to accept your post on vpFREE as a registration, but then I
noticed that you purchased OpVP in July and received it by email. Since
version 3 was not released until September 1 and is sold only on CD, the
version that you purchased was OpVP 2. The OpVP 3 update is not
compatible with version 2, so it would not help you.

The upgrade from version 2 to 3 is available on my web site at a
discount. Purchasing the upgrade will automatically register you for
free updates and notice of upgrades. Orders placed now will receive
version 3.1, so the current update would be redundant.

[vpFREE] Which LV CE property should we visit for my 7-Stars trip?

Does anyone have any recommendations as to which Las Vegas Caesar's property to choose for my 7-Stars trip?

Of course, it'd be nice to stay at the place that has the machine I plan on playing most - but, I'm willing to "commute" to my machine each day if it is located on a property that doesn't offer much more than the machine itself.

I figure there are probably some other factors I should consider:

1) Which 7-Stars club/lounge is best?

2) Which has the best restaurants and food?

3) Which has nicest rooms?

4) Do any have perks/benefits for staying on the property - for example, free/discounted entry to a popular nightclub on the property, access to a pool with a popular pool party, etc.

If you have any suggestions, or other things I might want to consider before booking my trip, I'd be interested in hearing them.

What ADT do you believe is optimal at that level of play? Would
playing once a year be best? Once per month? Do hotel stays without
playing lower it?

This question doesn't lend itself to a simple answer ...

On the surface, it's clear that should you split play, you sacrifice the Level 2 experience, but gain an additional 7* trip and Level 1 experience.

That much likely works out to a net plus. But the real issue in my book is how ADT is impacted. If you simply divide play between 2 accounts each visit, there's a fair chance that you'll see a sharp reduction in your ADT, with the possible consequence that you're no longer privy to your strongest offers.

That can be managed, in good part, by such tactics as only playing one card in any given day.

Bev and I typically have played in excess of 200K tier each year. It's only this last year, where combined play topped 350K that we sought 7* status for her as well.

We've been promoting Johnny C, head of MIT Blackjack Team for 10 years, for tonight's show. He won't be there. Instead, his wife, Laurie, will be there. In many ways this is an upgrade. I don't recall seeing much of what Schedule C-filing professional gamblers do or experience, but I'll explain what I saw.

Because I also wrote and trained others here and at times around the country for about 11 years, most of my expenses having ANYTHING to do with any of that, were claimed--and it made a huge difference. I also went thru three IRS audits during that time, and every penny I deducted was reviewed & allowed.

The key is in being precise, realistic, and having meticulous record keeping as well as being nice to the auditor(s) throughout the process. There is really no need for anxiety, worry, or loss of sleep if you do things right.

When I scan the digests, I see a lot of things put out there without the

proper warnings such as playing for the highest % return without regard to

the variance of the game will do to your bankroll. Using Schedule C is one

of those items that should have a warning label when applied to gambling.

I filed Schedule C for a consulting business which ran concurrently with my

gambling for about 10 years but I never included any gambling expenses on

a Schedule C even though I was well aware of what I could deduct. Even

though I had years where I had a level of activity which probably exceeded the

throughput of some pros and I'm sure I could have passed the material

participation tests for those years, I never claimed expenses under Schedule C.

When I started gambling in 1994, a goal was to quit when it turned south so

I was never sure how long or how active I would be. I was also unsure of

meeting the material participation tests over time (3 years & 10 years)

since you don't know if you're going to have periods of relative inactivity.

(Looking back, I could have met the tests.) However, if I only filed Schedule

C only when I needed the deductions that would set off red flags which I

didn't want.

For part-timers, filing Sched C as a professional is a course that ought to

considered carefully especially if you have another source of income that

involves a significant amount of your time. Early in my career I had the

good fortune of working for several corporations which empasized the goal --

GET A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP. I've never regretted the extra taxes I've paid.

I find it a little strange that Rob Singer has no idea of the tax

consequences of W-2s. Of course, you can avoid the AGI problem if you file a Sched

C as a professional gambler, but this is not allowed by the IRS for

everyone who plays negative games and even for most APs.

You can usually get a better conversion rate, but it will take a little bit of hustle.

The trick is to use your points to pay for other people's purchases and get them to give you cash at a rate that gives them a meaningful discount on the purchase.

Converting points to cash in this way can easily result in getting 75% of value for the points, which is much better than the "official" 2 for rate.

Big Guy: We are fortunate in that our local place that I mentioned before doesn't hit the RC's. We (i.e. my wife) will occassionally buy something at the gift shop so we will use some then. I bank the RC's for trips to Las Vegas. Since both of us are 7*'s, we will invite guests, usually family, and treat them to a great mini vacation - room, great food, shows, spa etc. In the meantime, we fully enjoy the perks. Good luck.

I filed as a professional gambler up until 2009. Since retiring I don't play often or at high limits any more because I only did that as a job, and I no longer see 7 figures worth of tax forms. So for the relatively small amount of W2g's I now get as a recreational player, that's something I'm not an expert on and I believe the jackpots far outweigh any potential tax liability in any situation. But those who pile up the tax forms and still lose represent a mystery to me.

You are absolutely right both LFB and RFB - Limited vs. Full are based on
your ADT not your tier score. Also if you book your room on certain promos
neither LFB nor RFB will be included. Limited entitles you to the all
non-gourmet, full RFB gives you run of the house, including gourmet and room
service. You can ask at checkin what status you were booked under or your
host can tell you. Also, if you come in under a promo, your host can
"convert" your reservation to LFB or RFB after you check in.

The comps I am referring to are Reward Credits.

I know that at Harrah's AC, based on experience, if I charge to the room or go to a dinner that my host set up for me, they take Reward Credits first. This was the case even though I had RFB.

I have double checked this policy with players, Total Rewards people and my host. The fact is that they will use your Total Reward credits first and pick up anything after that (I'm sure there's a limit).

So, if you have a Total Reward balance like I do, you never get to experience the benefits from the RFB. I choose to eat "normal" dinners instead of paying $200 for a dinner every weekend. But, seems I could be eating these gourmet meals if I wasn't so tight with my Total Rewards.

I have to say, even without being able to take advantage of the "free" gourmet meals, I am more than happy with the way I am treated while at their property.

In the end, I may just end up doing what Becky did. Buy something nice for myself and keep a balance for the rainy days.

On this thread, I am not sure what you mean by comps as it refers to CE properties. There is the ubiquitious Reward Credits which are used for comping. I'm on the West Coast and I don't think you can exchange your comps for money here. I have been in the mid-west and south where they've told me I could, but at that time I kept thinking 2for1, yuk. At one point I had over $6000 in comps. I finally just bought some nice jewelry at Caesars and at Harrah's in Lake Tahoe, but still have a little over $2000. That's a lot of food LOL

The Main Street Station has one. I believe the McDonald's next to
Fitzgerald's doesn't have one.

The Rivers (Des Plaines IL) is not really a very good house for VP players
so anything close to 99% appears in the database.

After the recent discussion on Double Super Times Pay, I have added the
three 8-6 BPX Double Super Times Pay to that database.

With the gimmick, the game is about 98.98%.

There is no Double Super Times Pay box to check off in the database so it is
shown as STP but commented as DSTP.

Downtown, Main Street Station has a group of tables (with electricity) near the slot booth. They call it the Internet Cafe, but there's no food or drink available, not even coffee. No password, just plug in and surf. At the other end is the city's coolest coffee shop, The Beat, at the corner of Fremont & 6th (across the street from the El Cortez). Ask for the password.

Boulder Highway is frustrating, I haven't found a signal. There's a Starbucks or two not too far away, and there's a public library on Tropicana near Boulder.

I find it a little strange that Rob Singer has no idea of the tax consequences of W-2s. Of course, you can avoid the AGI problem if you file a Sched C as a professional gambler, but this is not allowed by the IRS for everyone who plays negative games and even for most APs.

Harry and Jean are both correct and indicate there is a long list of negative tax issues. I want to mention that W-2s do not reduce your Social Security benefits, but they can increase the taxes you may need to pay on your SS benefits. Only half of your SS benefits are taxable but only if you exceed a rather low income threshold.

If you are paying a Medicare premium you may end up paying a much higher premium if your AGI goes over $85,000. This negative consequence is not well known because it does not affect your taxes.

If you live in a state that does not allow you to itemize your losses you can really get whacked with a huge state tax. One high roller on this board found out the hard way.

If you intend to play a lot at higher denom you really must be aware of the tax and Medicare issues.

You nailed it Harry, as always ;-) 2006/7 was my eye-opener. $860K in W2Gs, a net loss of $30K, and a tax bill that got inflated by over $26K because of the AGI impact. Having that huge stack of paperwork, without the actual wins, made me re-think my play.

Dream Card can be hard to spot because the glass almost looks like regular 3/5/10 play or spinpoker.

main street station has free wifi downtown ... tables near the slot club.

they claim you have to be a registered guest to use it ... but before i lived here, i'd give them play both before and after i sat down -just leaving my slot card on the table next to my netbook- and never had a problem.

Probably the most common effects are the loss of medical deductions and
casualty losses on Schedule A due to rise in AGI and the eligibility losses
on things like the Roth IRA because your AGI rose too high -- compared to a
normal work situation where, given the same net income, you would qualify
for the Roth without penalty because you don't have a bunch of W2s that kick
you over the limit.

As for younger people, the W2gs/1099s are an issue in that most of them are
taking the standard deduction. In order to claim losses they need to file
a schedule A which negates some/most of the benefits of the standard
deduction. If they don't get a lot of W2Gs, it might be better to just eat them &
stay with the standard deduction. In a way this is also a caution for the
occasional gambler using the standard deduction -- YOU COULD LOSE or BE A
SMALL WINNER & NOT BE ABLE TO CLAIM ANY LOSSES because losing the standard
deduction could be worse than not claiming the losses.

Only question I can speak to is the 7* quarterly golf comp for two at Rio Secco. Yes, it is offered to non local 7* players. At one time I was told it could not be combined with a 7* annual trip but this proved to be untrue. I've used it on my last two 7* annual trips, and plan to again in March. You can have it set up ahead or by a local host after you are there.

I will be LV on 7star trip at Caesars. Is there anywhere to find "events" like slot or blackjack tourneys, drawings, etc for Harrah's properties? When I go on their websites, all I can find is "Entertainment". Does anyone know of anything special going on that weekend other than the parties listed on LVA? I used to get info on big ($1000 entry fee) tourneys at Caesars, Bellagio, etc but it seems hard to find that info now unless you get an invite. Mr Dancer writes that you can ask management to reconsider and this will sometimes get the restriction removed. In my case, I think I got in trouble for playing too much on 5x point days. Now the most they ever offer is 2x points so I am hopeful they might take that into consideration. Does anyone know who the Stations appeal person is?

Every stations mailer has some kind of free play, multiplier and food offer but are they significant? 2 for 1 buffet, $10 off your next dinner or perhaps a free night during non blackout dates isn't anything to write home about.

[casino_comps] Sad News From The Midwest

It is with deep sadness that I am posting about the passing of John
Busam, Editor of 'Midwest Gaming and Travel'. I have known John for
only about a half dozen years and our contact has been intermittent. The
last time I spoke with John was on Friday January 13th, as we were
finalizing topics for my new column in Midwest Gaming and Travel. As
John had mentioned many times, all his writers write under pseudonyms,
and almost like a rite of passage he extended that tradition to me in
the email that started our most recent round of conversations.
Good afternoon Maven, How are you? It's been awhile since we've spoken.
I see your "Vegas Whats Up" and am wondering if there is something we
can jointly do with it. My readers are always looking for info about Las
Vegas and I think your "VWU" could be that source. One problem I see is
my deadlines possibly being too far out for you to accumulate the
information.
If you agree, please let me know when we can chat about this. Regards,

If you were scheduling our phone conversations you would probably allot
15 minutes for the tasks at hand. However the conversations would
invariably follow this pattern, we would almost immediately digress into
topics about local casinos, gambling legislation, professional poker
players, casino executives, casino writers... and then realize an hour
later that we hadn't made any progress with the topic at hand.
In our final conversation, after we finalized topics for my first column
John said: " You'll be the Anthony Curtis of the Midwest"
Anthony Curtis (Tony Curtis) another pseudonym, but John Busam was not
a pseudonym but was a real person that will really be missed by those
that knew him and enjoyed the magazine that he crafted.

Q: I'm moving to Vegas in April and there are two things
I'll miss from where I live now - fish tacos and tortilla
soup. I have the 2011 "Eating Las Vegas" book and don't see
either listed. Could you please recommend places with the
best fish tacos and tortilla soup (not necessarily from the
same restaurant)? Preferably east of the Strip, but I'm
willing to do longer drives if I have to.

Harry, I don't collect SS so I haven't any knowledge how that's affected by W2g's yet. But, anyone who likes money likes $1200 & above winners, and I certainly welcome as many of those as I can get.

Are you saying that there comes a point where winning that much might cost the player more than the jackpot's worth in tax liability?

This only begins to describe the tip of the iceberg. There are a wide range of exemptions, deductions, credits and other tax related items that are reduced/limited by Adjusted Gross Income above specified caps (AGI = essentially, income before deductions).

Reported W-2G income serves to inflate AGI without the benefit of offsetting loss deductions, with a consequence to many that they end up paying more tax when gaming activity is accounted for, even in absence of a net win.

Fortunately, a good number of such AGI limitations lapsed from the tax code with 2009. But enough remain that it's something about which any prudent player should remain circumspect.

the question here is an interesting one, and REALLY you have to look at your underlying intent. if you're trying to maximize your return on the $100 in the purely theoretical math world, you want to:

1. pick the machine with the highest theoretical payback.

2. play that machine at the lowest possible denominations that will give you that play table.

however, if you want to just have the highest theoretical possible return, you should throw that idea out the window and play for the biggest fricken return you can get. think: megabucks slots. (you may also get the added benefit of having your card points treated more kindly because you're not always playing VP.)

some casinos still use play-til-you-lose chips on table games (the golden gate downtown has these). the rule with those is you MUST use them on even money bets only ... and that's a big hint to you that you may well want to consider using casino money in cases where you are getting odds.

one way to look at it is to think that this is "free" money that they casino is offering you to win real money. if that's true, then you might want to go out and take a swing at the biggest possible money you can get. who cares if the return is zero? you know that there's a non-zero chance you'll be a multi-millionaire.

and, of course, there's mixes of this. play half for return, half for the grand slam.

i play for compromise of sorts ... when i get free play, i always play the highest possible denominations of the best possible return tables. so in a case like yours, i'd either feed $25 more into a machine and play a single spin of a $25 credit highest-returning VP machine ... or take four spins on the $5 machine.

don't be fooled by math types telling you there's a right and wrong answer here -- there's an entire psychological/thrill/POSSIBLE-return component that has nothing to do with theoretical return ... and my applied math degree won't tell you what that is ... but your gut will.

Why don't they represent profit? I' ve always tried to collect as many W2g's as I could get my hands on. How they affect AGI should never become a factor if a player is going to play to win. And like our friends at GE have discovered, "creative accounting" is a means to a very meaningful end.

Assume the concern isn't with RF w-2G's, but with those issued on lower level hits (SF's, multiline quads, etc). They don't represent profit, but serve to inflate AGI and can reduce legitimate deductions via phase-outs, etc.

It has been my experience that Stations doesn't care much for vp players especially those that play only positive machines on extra point days. In the past they were great but now they limit the comps and perks to a minimum. I do know a SLOT player that is ahead $30k or so for last year that still gets generous multipliers, food and comps. If you work the system they will fight back. I mix my play enough to the point I still get decent offers and comps. Its a balancing act.

The 9/5 $1/$2 JB Spinpoker (2 slant top machines still, outside the Palace H/L along the aisle adjacent to the restrooms) are a very viable play for this.

Personally, I'd play a single line ... 200 plays and cash out.

I would play whatever I normally play at that casino, since I'm always trying to "maximize the value" of my bets, not just when I'm playing free play.

But if you'd feel better if you cashed out a big percentage of the free play, play the most number of hands you can in order to reduce the variance. So look for good paytables at lower denominations.

I seem to recall hearing that South Point is the best place to play dream card. I will have a better answer for you in a week and a half as I will be in town and intend to play there.
